Tile
Technicals
Floor tiles are important for the end-product of your design, but knowing the technicalities is important too. Every tile has its slip resistance rating, measured by the angle before an object starts sliding downhill.
The tiles are categorised by a Ramp (R) test, where the R-value determines the anti-slip tile properties. The ratings range from R9 to R13.
R11/12 – tiles that are glazed and unglazed finish. These are regarded as safe to use as a minimum in bathrooms, porches and swimming areas.
R10 – tiles that have a glazed matt finish. A towel is always important to have been laid down when applied in wet areas. It’s also suitable for kitchen floors and living areas.
R9 – tiles that have a smooth glazed matt finish. These tiles are usually used in dry areas, but can be applied in wet areas as well as long as you lay a towel to prevent you from slipping.
R13 – tiles that are glazed and unglazed finish. These are suitable for all commercial projects, usually used in public areas and around swimming pools as they have the roughest finish.
Tile Suitability
We recommend tiles that have low water absorption and resistant to changes in temperature to be suitable for the outdoors. In addition, having a homogenous tile is a plus in selecting the suitability for outdoors.
Wall tiles tend to be thinner and lighter than floor tiles. They’re also made with another type of glaze and clay that is able to give the many decorative effects that these tiles have. They are, however, not designed for foot traffic and are not load bearing.
Floor tiles, on the other hand, are more resistant to abrasive forces like foot traffic. They’re thicker and harder. You can also always use floor tiles on the walls for a more uniform look in your living area.
Quantity, Maintenance and Care
The quantity of each tile per box is indicated at the side of the box. Generally, 600x600mm tiles have 4 pieces in them.
Tiles are easy to maintain. If you’re going to be using store-bought cleaner, always get pH neutral cleaners; or you can always use diluted white vinegar solution!
Most porcelain and ceramic tiles have a nano-glazed coating that makes cleaning and maintenance much easier. For basic cleaning, you just have to use a pH neutral cleaner and wipe with a damp non-abrasive cloth. Otherwise, you can mix a 50:50 with white vinegar and water to clean excess soap from the surface.
If you use textured tiles, you can mix a 3:1 ratio of baking soda to water to form a paste and use the mixture to scrub the tiles using a wet toothbrush!
In the kitchen, cooking oils will tend to accumulate, especially on the splashback designs that you love! You’ll need to use degreasing agents, which you can buy in your local store, and then clean with a wet cloth.
If we’re sticking back to the natural methods, good degreasing agents are lemon oil and orange oil. These can also leave a fresh scent in your home!
For metallic tile trims, just use a dry duster and keep it dust free! Certain metals, like brass, do need to be waxed to maintain their shine. Otherwise, leaving it to age could add some lovely rustic look.
Finishes
Trims
Tile trims are used to give a neat finish and to protect the edges of the tile from impact. They also help in creating unique designs that add a luxurious finish to your project.
You can use tile trims in areas where cut edges are usually placed, like around window frames or for when you tile your staircases for visual safety.
There are 2 types of materials for trims, PVC and Metal (stainless steel, brass, aluminium, etc.). From metals, there are different styles of edges such as quadrant, square edge and straight edge.
Grouting
Grout is used to give a finished look in the spaces between the tiles. Selecting the right grout in a given area is important. There are different colours to match the shade of your tile, or even to give a design you never thought about.
Normally, cement grout is used. Cement-based grout fills in the gaps for a finish. It is not waterproof and stains easily.
On the other hand, epoxy grout is a higher quality product. It is waterproof and is stain-resistant, making it suitable to be used in wet areas and for splashbacks.
